Let's give a bland recipe a flavourful fusion: Personnel Management to Human Resource Management

Just like how the culinary world has shifted from traditional recipes to fusion cuisine, managing employees of an organization also has evolved over the past years.

Two decades back, employee management often revolved around following a strict recipe: hire, train, and supervise. This approach, much like a bland dish, lacked the flavor and creativity needed to truly engage and motivate employees.

While the goal of Personnel management was to keep the company running smoothly- filling positions, managing tasks and sticking to a basic recipe HRM recognizes employees as valuable assets. It focuses on creating a positive work environment, fostering employee development, and aligning human capital with organizational goals. HRM doesn’t just manage employees, it empowers them. It has emerged as a more dynamic and effective approach. It's like a fusion cuisine that combines the best of traditional methods with innovative techniques.

  •           Google understood the value of employee happiness and well-being in boosting productivity and innovation. The organization offers a variety of perks and bonuses to foster a fun and interesting environment. Google has introduced several programs, including on-site exercise centers, complimentary gourmet meals, recreational activities, and flexible work hours. These products encourage a healthy work-life balance and a sense of community within the organization.
  •        Netflix's HR culture, outlined in the Harvard Business Review article "How Netflix Reinvented HR," emphasizes flexibility, responsibility, and transparency in order to create a high-performance work environment. They value talent and trust, giving staff autonomy while expecting them to operate in Netflix's best interests. This strategy eliminates standard procedures such as vacation monitoring and formal performance reviews, in favor of open feedback and accountability. They promote a "context, not control" mentality in which leaders guide rather than micromanage, thereby empowering people to make the best decisions.

Companies from Sri Lanka have enormous potential to improve their HR processes by transitioning from traditional personnel management to more contemporary HRM approaches. They may improve employee engagement, productivity, and innovation by following the lead of global giants such as Google, Microsoft and Netflix and below are some strategies they can adopt.

  • Creating a positive work culture by Offering flexibility in working hours, team-building activities, and wellness programs can help employees feel valued and connected. Prioritizing employee well-being leads to higher satisfaction and retention rates.
  • Investing in employee training programs, leadership development initiatives etc to help employees to sharpen their skills and advance within the organization.
  • Promote two- way communication involving the employees in the decision making process ensuring that their voices are heard and making them feel valuable within the organization.

The Perfect Recipe: Blending Leadership and Management for Success

Have you ever thought of what differentiates a great manager from an extraordinary leader? Is it only a matter of title or anything more? While these two terms are frequently used interchangeably, they are distinct concepts with important implications for an organization's performance. In this blog post, we will look at the differences between the two and how they could collaborate to produce a successful workplace. While most organizations expect their managers to be leaders, the emphasis during hiring and performance assessments is frequently on management metrics rather than leadership skills. This difference is particularly noticeable when individuals are promoted or placed into management positions because they excel at completing tasks but lack the leadership skills required to guide and motivate others. It's a typical scenario: people pursue managerial roles for the benefits, such as increased income, more power, or the prestige associated with the title. However, being ...
