What is Employer Branding?

Employer Branding is the perception people have of your company as a place to work. Among both current employees and in the broader workforce. It’s how you present and promote your organization to job seekers and to those already part of your team.In other words it is the sum total of your company's reputation, culture, values, and employee experiences. Are Corporate Branding and Employer Branding the same?

Employer branding and corporate branding might seem like twins, but they’re more like siblings with different personalities. While corporate branding is all about wooing customers by showcasing products, services, and market strengths, employer branding focuses on attracting and retaining employees by promoting the workplace culture and career growth opportunities.

Though they target different audiences, these two brand personas work in harmony. A great corporate brand can naturally attract job seekers, while a strong employer brand often creates a positive work environment that customers can feel too. When aligned, they form a unified, powerful brand identity—one that not only draws in customers but also keeps top talent inspired and loyal. (Foster et al., 2010)

Why Employer Brand is Critical?

In the saturated job market, organizations compete not only for customers, but also for top talent—and it's a close battle. With candidates having more options and higher expectations than ever before, a strong employer brand has become a company's secret weapon for differentiation. A well-crafted employer brand gives businesses a competitive advantage by attracting and retaining top talent. It's not just about filling available positions; it's about establishing the organization as a place where employees desire to grow, innovate, and prosper.

Consider the numbers: studies have shown that, 88% of job seekers consider a company's employer brand when applying for a job, 72% of recruiting leaders around the world agree that employer branding has a significant impact on hiring (Zurnamer, 2023) and Companies that invest in employer branding are three times more likely to make a quality hire (LinkedIn, 2024) 

In terms of employer branding, creativity may make all the difference. One particularly notable example is Heineken's unique "The Candidate" campaign, which turned the typical employment interview on its head. Instead of the conventional Q&A style, Heineken used a series of unexpected challenges to expose potential workers' personalities and cultural fit, demonstrating their commitment to finding people who share their brand values. McDonald's has also embraced the power of storytelling through their "Special People Serving Special Moments" marketing celebrating their employees by recognizing them as "special people" who bring unique value to the customer experience. This campaign highlights McDonald’s dedication to appreciating the individuals behind the counter, giving them a sense of pride and recognition within the company. Both campaigns reflect how creative employer branding can attract talent, reinforce employee pride, and foster a sense of purpose and belonging in the workforce.

The Stronger The Better

Creating a successful employer brand involves communicating an authentic story that resonates with both employees and potential hires. This includes publishing real employee testimonials (Velasquez, 2023), demonstrating business values through meaningful policies and benefits, and keeping an active social media presence to highlight daily work life and accomplishments. Awards and recognitions, such as "Great Place to Work", highlight the brand's dedication to employee satisfaction. Internal branding initiatives, such as development programs and consistent recognition, are equally important in instilling employee loyalty and pride. Together, these methods attract top people and foster a supportive, growth-oriented culture in which workers are proud to be a prat of.

In conclusion, by investing in a genuine and engaging workplace identity, companies can build an environment where employees feel appreciated and excited to contribute. This commitment to employer branding turns employees into passionate advocates, attracting top talent and fostering a lively culture that fuels success and propels the organization into the future.

I have noticed that most Sri Lankan companies have started using Tiktok as a platform for that and it is really impressive to see that we are finally coming out of the 'traditional-company' frame.
